HYPERLAPSE

Hyperlapse is a technique used in photography and videography where a series of still images taken from different positions and perspectives are combined to create a seamless and accelerated motion effect. It allows for a unique and dynamic way of capturing the passage of time and movement, often resulting in visually exciting and engaging footage.

Hyperlapse footage of an artwork being created encapsulates in a few seconds the passage of time invested in its making, sometimes months, symbolizing the artist’s dedication and the gradual realization of their vision. Just as the hyperlapse condenses the creation process, it also hints at the artwork’s eventual aging. Over time, both the artwork and audience perceptions evolve, reflecting changes in cultural context and personal interpretation. Hyperlapse documentation serves as a visual metaphor for the cyclical nature of creation, aging, and the evolving relationship between artist, artwork, and audience.

PROPOSAL

The proposal is to create an immersive experience that aims to envelop viewers in a journey through hyperlapses of artistic creation. The concept revolves around projecting highly detailed and intricate psychedelic hyperlapses onto the walls and ceiling of the room, creating a kaleidoscopic atmosphere that fully engulfs the viewer. As the viewer moves within the space, their silhouette casts a shadow, adding an interactive dimension to the experience.

Each hyperlapse loop represents months of intensive work condensed into mere seconds, like stepping into a time-travel machine, where one spiral through a whirlwind of artworks being brought to life. The hyperlapses, infused with vibrant colors and intricate patterns, serve as snapshots capturing the essence of a creative process.

As viewers immerse themselves in this environment, they become voyeurs, witnessing a fragment of the artist’s life unfold before their eyes. The rapid succession of images creates a sense of urgency and intensity, inviting viewers to contemplate the fleeting nature of time and the profound depth of artistic expression.

PRACTICAL

1 room covered with the hyperlapses
• 15 hyperlapse videos
• projected on 4 walls (3 walls + ceiling)
• 4 projectors
• the floor being covered in black cloth and reflective material

1 room with explanation, and 1 hyperlapse
• 1 hyperlapse video
• projected on 1 wall (main room, left wall
• 1 projector

Examples of the hyperlapses are below.

WHY IT SHOULD TAKE PLACE AT TITANIK

The TITANIK space, open to immersive experiences, can be divided into two sections. One room would be entirely dedicated to the hyperlapse experience, featuring soundscapes composed by an experimental drone noise band exclusively for this project. In the second room, a hyperlapse would be visible from the street, enticing passersby to learn more about the technique and encouraging them to experience the immersive hyperlapse room.

DURATION AND PREFERRED DATES

Ideally several weeks will allow more people to access the immersive visual experience, during the darkest period of the year in Finland. January / February / October / November / December.
